Same day edits are all the rage....they are both entertaining for guests, and satisfying for the Couple who get to see video footage of their wedding day before Dancing even gets underway. Everytime I watch the editors work their magic at the wedding, I am impressed...how quickly they can edit a video to perfection!

I recently had the distinct pleasure of working with Nadia and Anwar...HERE is their Same Day Edit...brought to you courtesy of Goody Cambay Wedding Films. Guests watched this video as dessert was set in front of them...it's almost as amazing as this couple was to work with.

2011 was an incredible year for LKWD. We had the opportunity to work with so many amazing couples, each unique and eager to show their commitment to each other. We also had the pleasure of working on some Corporate Gala's that were too much fun! We want to Thank all of you for a wonderful 2011, and for letting us into your lives in such a special way. ~The Wedding Dress Hanger ~

This is certainly a trend that we saw in 2011. And we love it.

So often, Brides want the classic photograph of their dress hanging from the window, or some variation of this shot. Only then do you realize that you have your dress hanging on the hanger it came with - usually wire...yuck! I have often gone into closets all over the Brides home looking for a decent hanger for this photo...and the best I've ever found was a wooden one...(because really, who has super fancy hangers for their everyday clothing items?) So this to me, is the perfect solution! I especially love the one's with the Bride's future last name....a.k.a. "Mrs. Smith".

So I've gone online, to one of my favourite sites in the universe....ETSY...and located a few stores who make these!

I'm a wedding lover. Obvious statement. I'm also a fashion lover. So I figured that tonight, I would make a post about some of my favourite 2012 Collection Wedding Gowns from various designers! There is something very exciting to me about looking at wedding gowns. Even though I got married 6 years ago, I still look at Gowns, and secretly wish that I owned a Bridal Gown Salon if only so that I could try them on everyday! It ignites that fresh excitement that every girl gets when she is planning her wedding. A dress is under a lot of pressure to make the Bride feel like a Million dollars on her Wedding day! The cut, the colour and the price tag ( no, I'm not talking about diamonds now) say a lot about the wearer...So, lets just say I was getting married in 2012. Here are the Gowns I might try on...

Flowers of the Season

As we move into the Fall and Winter months, we often have Brides asking us what flowers are available for their weddings. Many of the Floral designers that we work with have access to any flowers at any time of year, but if the flower your desire is off season, it will usually cost more to get and they cannot guarentee the colour of them, seeing as they will be grown oversees in a greenhouse. Most bulb flowers ( i.e. Peonies) will be closed when they arrive if you try to get them in the winter for example.

So, if you are trying to keep within the possibilities locally for your fall or winter wedding, these are some of my personal favourites!

Fall Wedding Florals:

1. Mango Calla Lilies.

These rich mango coloured calla's are such a beautiful flower for the Autumn months.

2. Dahlias

I love the soft pink colour of this Dahlia and Rose bouquet! I'm also a big fan of any type of floral accent like these crystal centers! Looks like a brooch.

3. Zinnia

These are a traditional Chinese flower that come in a variety of colours. Stunningly vibrant!

4. Ranunculus

These little cuties are growing (pardon the pun) very popular! They also come in a variety of shades and are adorable! we have also seen many Brides getting their Cake Designers to mimic these flowers on their cakes!

Winter Wedding Flowers

1. Amaryllis

These are great because they have a large head. They fill a large space in a vase or bouquet and have maximum impact. These are beautiful!

2. Hanging Amaranthus

This is a great accent for any centerpiece or Aisle piece as seen below. It gives almost an enchanted forest feeling to any decor theme.

3. Sweet Peas

Most people have seen these in white, but I love the soft purple colour as well! Since purple seemed to be the on-trend wedding colour of 2011, I wanted to share this!

4. Anemones

These are simply incredible, no? The black centers are the perfect compliment to a wedding that has black in its colour scheme. Love them!

Brooklyn & Co.

LKWD has been growing year over year since it's creation. Laura and I are so thrilled to have worked on so many weddings and look forward to many many more. As we have grown, we have started to get involved with some other events as well, and we are very excited to announce that LKWD is expanding and will be launching a new sector to our business very soon called... LK Events! We are thrilled to be getting involved in Corporate and other Social events.

SO, on that note, We recently planned a "Breakfast at Tiffany's" Inspired Baby Naming Ceremony for a very special baby girl ( very near and dear to our hearts ) and here are a few shots! We once again thank the amazingly talented Tia Kristina for capturing some great pics!

Party goers were in awe of the stunning dessert table filled with theme coloured sweets! As tasty as they were beautiful! and as every guest left the party that day, they each received a "Brooklyn & Co." blue bag with a small Blue Spruce seedling inside with a poem. The thought behind it was that each guest can plant this baby tree, and watch it grow along with sweet baby Brooklyn.

Came across this fabulous array of Blue Wedding Shoes on Aisle Candy while surfing the web tonight! Just had to share them with you all! Love Love Love the Gucci rhinestone peeptoes (bottom left!) We are seeing a big trend this season with blue wedding shoes, even if blue is not in the particular colour scheme. I personally love it and think it's really fun!

I came across these photo's on one of our fave photog's website () As soon as I heard the story behind it, I fell in love.

This Bride wanted something unique for her Bridal Bouquet....and we aren't just talking about mixing it up with amaryllis in lieu of roses...she inspires me with her creativity.

She asked each one of her friends and family members for a Brooch. Once she collected all the magnificent pieces of jewellery, she had her bouquet made with them to create this:

If we've said it once, we'll say it again. Your wedding becomes truly memorable when you make small ways to make it your own. Special to you. I think that this lovely bride found a way to do just that. She had a special bouquet, and her guests got to see a piece of them in it as well. As Aron Goss of Calculated style said best...

The 2011 Wedding Season has been incredible so far... With a number of wedding days come and gone, I've compiled a list of some of my favourite things I love to see at weddings and regularly suggest to my couples. So here it goes...

Number 1: Washroom Baskets

They are a simple, yet personal touch to spruce up the washrooms at your venue and add that little something extra that shows your guests your appreciation by anticipating some of the items they might find themselves in need of during your reception. You can easily get everything you need for them from Dollar Stores so you don't need to break the bank on this one, and a simple picture frame beside each, or a tied note card to the basket can explain what they are and who they are from. The poems and item suggestions from Weddings by Colour will help you make this a very do-able item for your wedding.

Number 2: Dancing Shoes (Flip Flop Baskets)

For the price of fashion, we ladies will walk out the door in the hottest of heels... but 6 hours later when "Billy Jean" comes on and our feet are aching, we're in trouble. Something to consider to offer comfort and relief to the women at your reception and keep them dancing "All Night Long" is to offer an assortment of flip flop sizes when dancing begins. Most brides choose to by them in standard black and white or in their wedding colours and place them in a basket by the dance floor when dancing begins. Cute Labels like "Kick your Heels Off... Dancing Shoes" or "Dancing Shoes... Dance the Night Away" will be appreciated greatly by many of the ladies in the house. Old Navy's Annual $1.00 Flip Flop Sale is often the best score for stocking up on these prior to your big day.

Number 3: "Thank You" Signs

The use of a cute "THANK YOU" Sign during your formal photographs on the day makes a perfect photo choice when choosing the shot to use on your guest thank you cards. You can make your own or shop one of my personal favourites www.esty.com to find tones of reasonably priced options.

Number 4: Programs & Menu Cards

I put these on the list because they are some elements of the wedding that couples don't automatically think they need to include. Whether you chose to DIY these or have your stationary company create custom pieces to match your theme, hands down, guests like to know what's happening as the ceremony takes place and they very much appreciate knowing what's on the menu when called to their seats. I think it's human nature to want to follow along with a printed order of events during the ceremony; it's also really nice to put names with faces for who's who in the bridal party. When it comes to dinner, couples sometimes ask me if providing a menu is necessary. I always respond with, "Yes, even 1 per table is ideal". I equivilate it to going to a restaurant and being served a pre-set dinner without a menu presented. All agree, it's nice to know what's coming, how many courses, entrees etc.

Number 5: Candle Light

No matter what your style, weddings are romantic... Adding candles to your reception venue can easily take a stunning room, and warm it up with a little extra romance. Easily doable by consulting your florist/decorator or hitting up the Dollar Store, Ikea, Home Sense, Kitchen Stuff Plus, Bowring etc., this one element of your wedding can create an unforgettable ambiance. From votives, to cylinders, hanging tea lights to candelabras, I like to see candles on the guest tables, head table(s), cake tables and accented throughout the venue. Most venues are fine with you bring in your own candles as long as the flames are covered.

Day After Photo Session

Photography is the most important tool in prolonging your sweet wedding day memories. You'll find yourself looking back at your photo's in years from now and seeing the emotion across your face, and those of your cherished guests.

That is my favourite part of my wedding album. Seeing the genuine smile across my face and remembering what I was thinking in that moment.

Often, couples invest in an engagement photo shoot as well. You will oftentimes see a large portrait of the wedded couple at their reception. However, I've noticed that lately these enagagement shoots are rarely taken right after the couple has gotten engaged. When your excitement is at it's freshest. It's usually something that couples do sometime close to the wedding, for the sole purpose of having this picture to blow up at the reception ( and perhaps to keep on their mantle too!). But not because its a true photoshoot to capture your emotions when newly engaged.

This is why, I am newly infatuated with the idea of the "Day After Wedding" shoot!

I love the idea, because you can use it in two different ways.

1) You can use it to trash your dress! And come up with a really awesome part of your wedding album. This tends to be the more fun part of the album...

2) Or, you can use it to simply take shots of yourslves as a newly married couple and remember that first day that you look into each others eyes with a new excitement. This is a very new trend, and I love it.

We always love to see new trends in the wedding world as we are always looking for ways to make each couples wedding truly unique. So for those of you who value your memories which are captured in photographs, consider this type of shoot. Because you will soon see, the feeling you have the day after you become man and wife is one of the most exhilerating and memorable feelings you'll ever experience.

Tips for a Successful Wedding Reception...

Planning your wedding reception requires more than just picking out a menu, deciding on linens and chair decor, and finalizing a centerpiece! In order to have a successful wedding reception, especially in the eyes of your guests, we suggest a lot of time and care go into the planning of the evening's events. After all the time, hard work and money you've invested in your wedding, your reception is for most guests the "Make it or Break It" factor. That being said, here our some of most valuable tips to help steer you in the right direction:

1) Have a plan - If you're not working with a professional wedding coordinator, ensure that you sit down with your fiance and come up with a detailed time line for everything that will happen from bridal party introductions, and speeches, to grace and the champagne toast. Have a plan for when everything is going to happen throughout the night and ensure that those involved in speaking as well as your dj, mc and venue are all on the same page. Give your dj your special song list well in advance too!

2) Don't overload your reception in content - Some of the biggest mistakes we've seen couples make is pack too many speeches, slide shows, photos presentations, games into their reception. Guest will loose interest easily and once you've lost their focus, there really is no getting it back... Limit yourselves to no more than 1-2 video/photo presentations and spread them out. Have no more than 6 short speeches (Ex. both parents, maid of honour, best man, bride and groom). Stick to no more than 2 forms of live entertainment (i.e a violinist during dinner and dancers during the reception). Guests want to be entertained while they eat, but don't want to feel bombarded with a variety show.

3) Make sure that the people who have been listed on your timeline know what is expected of them and at what point in the evening. You never want to catch someone off guard with saying grace, giving a speech or a toast.

4) Be thoughtful when creating a seating plan. Don't put people who wouldn't mesh well together together. Don't put a single guest at a table of couples, and do try to keep important family members close to the parent tables. Once you've created your seating plan, check it over again, and again and again. Cross reference with all RSVP cards. We've seen it happen and it's so awkward: A couple shows up to table 7 as indicated on their seating card, only to find all seats filled. All guests at table 7 double check their cards and confirm they are in the right place and look sympathetically to the seatless couple. When you're dealing with a couple hundred guests, mistakes are easily made; try to catch them before your guests do on the day of your wedding. There is nothing more awkward that feeling like you don't have a place to sit.

5) If you are serving beef, serve it medium. While yes, most true red meat lovers prefer their meat no more than medium rare, many guests are turned off by bloody meat and we've seen far too many guests turned off as oppose to turned on by the appearance of their red meat. When you're aiming to please large groups, play it safe and serve it medium.

6) Don't have cocktails last longer than 1.5 hours. If you reception starts at 5:00pm, by 6:30pm most guests will be ready to find their way to their seats and get the night going.

7) Take care of all formal items before opening the dance floor. All speeches, presentations, centerpiece give away games that require guest cooperation (silence) or participation should be done before you "release the crowd". It's ok to interrupt dancing for the cake cutting, bouquet or garter toss, but expecting dancing, smoking, drinking, and mingling guests to return their seats and pipe down for a speech after 45 mins of high energy activity is unrealistic. It simply won't happen.

8) Make sure you serve enough food. While most weddings leave guests full to the brim, the odd reception has come and gone where guests are left wanting more. It's poor etiquette not to satisfy the taste buds of your guests. Imagine having friends/family over for dinner only to find out they hit up McDonald's right after they left.

9) If you are giving away your centerpiece, make sure it's something easy to take away. Large vases filled with liters of water almost always cause problems when guests try to remove them from the table. Likewise, if you plan to only give away the floral topper, make sure it's something guests can actually reach! We've seen guests knocking over centerpieces, spilling large vases of water, or dropping them all on their attempts to bring that centerpiece home. While we love the idea of giving it away, you want your guests to be able to easily take it away.

10) As the bride and groom, write a speech or at least put down points on paper. The climax speeches of the night are hearing from the couple themselves. There is nothing more disappointing than watching a couple ramble, mumble or stutter through an impromptu speech, only to end it then come right back on because you've forgotten something important.

THE ROYAL WEDDING...

The day so many of us have been waiting for has finally come: April 29th, 2011 will go down in history. As a little girl I spent hours fantasizing over Princess Diana and Prince Charles' nuptials... 30 years later I find myself just as intrigued at the Royal Wedding. However, this time round, I'm watching it with a creative eye for trends, hits and misses...

The top trend I think we'll see dominate the wedding world in the next few years will be a slight turn back to traditional. Kate has reinvented sleeves, lace and the tiara and I wouldn't be surprised if more brides abandon the strapless gown for some royal, sleeved elegance. Kate was absolutely stunning in her custom Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen design. This for me, was a 100% hit!

Another hit was the style and colour of Pippa, Kate's sisters Alexander McQueen bridesmaid dress. Traditionally, only children are included in royal wedding parties. It was nice to see Kate and William honour their siblings and include them as well. Pippa was a knock out beauty in her all white fitted gown with one of the most flattering neck lines I've seen in years. And the All-White wedding party was a classic choice. I suspect we'll see more of this as brides step outside the box and choose to keep it regal by putting their bridesmaids in whites and ivory.

Prince William himself was dapper in a red uniform of Colonel of the Irish Guards. There has been some debate as to whether he should of sported the blue uniform like his brother Prince Harry. But I think the red was a bold and well defined choice.

What I did think was missing however, was a floral arrangement for Pippa, while yes she had her hands full with the little ones, I still felt she needed a little something at times to complete the look!

As for Kate's bouquet, she carried an understated small white arrangement. According to the royal press release, "The bouquet is a shield-shaped wired bouquet of myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William and hyacinth. The bouquet was designed by Shane Connolly and draws on the traditions of flowers of significance for the Royal Family, the Middleton family and on the Language of Flowers." While some critics are already saying it was too small for such a grand occasion, I stick with the "less is more" motto and think it was a perfect choice in terms of size. While I wasn't too crazy about the choice of flowers, I did appreciate that her flowers didn't in any way compete with her elegance as a bride.

Hats and hair fasteners are another sure thing to influence the Canadian wedding world. Being from a Scottish/British background, I've always loved them. But there is no way that the commentary and beauty of all the hats and hair accessories we've seen in the last few hours will not inspire some of us Canadians to go out and get some of our own head dresses. Victoria and David Beckham both wore hats to the royal wedding and looked absolutely fabulous in them.

Overall, the wedding of Kate & William was entertainment and what I hope will be a true love story for the royal family. Can't wait for details on the Palace Reception! All the best to the happy couple!!!

Weclome Baby Brooklyn...

Today's blog post is the happiest of posts. I'm proud to announce that at 9:54am this morning (March, 21st) our own Kelly Spinelli, welcomed her second child, Brooklyn Jude Spinelli, weighing in at 7lbs. 9 oz. Mommy and baby are doing well, and they are all very excited to have baby Brooklyn join their family.

Lancy & Collin - A True Love Affair...

Last July, we had the pleasure of helping Lancy & Collin walk down the aisle in true vintage-chic style at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club . Lancy was one of the best brides we've ever worked with. Her attention to detail and her creatively inspired me month by month! She single handily crafted many of her decor and wedding elements and displayed a true commitment to bringing her visions to life. Photographed by the incredible GeeHae Jeong Lancy & Collin brought personality, romance and wonder to their special day. Above all, they emboided a warmth and sincereity that lit their reception room on fire... not to mention their send off at the end of the night!

However, I've come to notice that many couple's quickly find themselves in a struggle of dream vs. reality; They dreamed of wedding that in reality costs a lot more than expected. As a wedding planner, part of our job is to help our clients get the most value for their money, but sometimes it's a real challenge to bring a clients vision to life because the dream they come to you with, is severely under-priced in their mind compared to the reality of what things cost.

This article is our way of sharing with you what weddings in 2011 really cost. We wanted to be able to share with couples what the normal rates are in the wedding world so that they can dream within their scope of reality and know what they're walking into when they begin to meet with vendors. There will always be options under these average costs, and quotes that come in way over. We know some couples will read this article and say, "Well my venue was only $100 per person," and that's to be expected. There are great deals to be had, but for the sake of general education, here is what we've come to expect as planners in the Canadian Wedding Industry!

VENUE:
If you're going with a regular all inclusive food and alcohol banquet hall, the average cost we're seeing with tax and gratuities included is around $120-$150 per head. If you're going with a more original venue such as a museum or historic building that requires you to also bring in a caterer and rentals (chairs, tables, place settings, glass ware, furniture, lighting etc.), expect to pay at least $200 per head.

DJ & AV:
The average DJ service for the night for a DJ/MC is $1200-$1500. If you want extra AV elements, expect something around the following:
- Intelligent lights: $100-$150 each
- Up lights for the room: $25-$50 each
- Pin lighting for guest tables: $18-$25 per table
- Use of in house AV screen: $100-200 each
- Dry Ice for special dances: $100-$175
- Custom Monograms with Lights: $200-$250 each

LIVE BAND:
If you're considering a live band for the night in place of a DJ, expect to spend starting $4,000 easily.

LIVE ENTERTAINERS:
Many couples are bringing in about a half hour to an hour of special entertainment like string ensembles, drummers, violinists, pianists. Be prepared to budget at least $400-$500 for no more than 30-60 minutes of any of the above. If you're looking for a whole team of dancers for a 30 minute set, be prepared to pay between $500-$800.

FLOWERS:
Real flowers aren't cheap, but neither are artificial ones. Any good artificial flower will easily be double the cost of a real one. For that reason, we suggest keeping it real with these real life average costs:
- Bridal Bouquet: $150-$200
- Bridesmaid Bouquet: $70-$100 each
- Corsages: $15-20 each
- Boutonnieres: $10-15 each
- Alter arrangement: $45-$75
- Large Ceremony Fresh Floral Arrangements on Pedestals: $200-$400 each
- Pew Arrangements: $15-30 each
- Flower Girl Baskets/Kissing Balls: $25-40 each
- Centerpieces: Low vase: $50-$100/ High vase: $80-$130
- Candelabra/Crystal Chandelier Rentals for Centerpieces: $40-$65
- Low and Long for Head Table: $125-$150

DECOR:
Decor is one way to create ambiance at your wedding and bring your theme to life, but it does come at a cost.
Backdrops: $700-$1500
Head table and Cake Table decor (linens, candles, flowers, accents): $500-$1000
Linens: $18-$25
Napkins: $2-$4
Napkin Rings: $2-$4
Charger Plates: $2-$5
Runners: $6-$10
Overlays: $10-$15
Chivari or Ghost Chairs: $8-$10

PHOTOGRAPHER:
An experienced photographer will cost you anywhere from $3000-$5000 for full day coverage, usually including an engagement shoot and second shooter on the wedding day.

VIDEOGRAPHER:
An experienced photographer will cost you anywhere from $2500-$4500 for full day coverage, usually including a second camera and moderate to extensive editing.

CAKE:
The average 3-4 tier wedding cake can easily run you anywhere from $500-$1000 depending on flavours and design. When it comes to wedding cakes, the more detailed the design, the more it will cost you. Time equals money and a simple cake can be done in half the time of an equal sized but way more detailed custom cake.

TRANSPORTATION:
Most limo packages are for a standard 6 hours (that can not be broken up). Using 6hours as a base, expect to pay around $800 for a stretch limo, $1100-$1300 for an SUV limo, and $1800-$2400 for a limo bus (depending on size). Night pick ups for the bride and groom are always extra!

HAIR AND MAKE UP:
Bridal hair is usually around $120, and slightly less for a trail. Bridal make-up is usually around $100 and slightly less for a trial. Bridesmaids tend to be a little cheaper than the bride for make-up and up-dos.

TUX RENTALS:
The average full piece tux rental with shoes, tie, vests and pocket square will run you anywhere from $140-$160 on average.

BRIDAL ATTIRE:
The new average we're seeing when it comes to gowns, shoes, veil, accessories is between $2500-$4000.

CHURCH FEES:
Most churches have a set fee to host your wedding ceremony which usually amounts to a cost of $400-$600.

CUSTOM INVITES/STATIONARY:
Custom invites are a beautiful way to infuse your personality into your wedding. Prices are often structured based on the quantity order, but be prepared to pay between $5-$8 depending on design style. If you're planning to match wedding programs, place cards, menus and table numbers to your invites, be prepared to shell out a few hundred more on top of the invite cost.

So there you have it... the general things couples will consider when planning a wedding and the general costs. We truly feel that every couple deserves to have a wedding that is uniquely their own and full of all of their wildest expectations! Hopefully in the last few minutes, we've given you a little more insight about what to expect those expectations to cost.

10 Ways to Make Your Wedding More Memorable...

Every couple wants their wedding to be special, unique and truly memorable. In order to get your creative juices flowing, we've compiled some of our best tips for creating a wedding day that will leave your guests talking... in a good way!

Tip 1: Good Food
We're starting with this one, because it's the quickest make it or break it. Chances are you've all been to a wedding where the food was less than great, and chances are it's the thing you remember most. The best way to win over your guests is still through their bellies. Choose a venue that is highly regarded in terms of quality of food, presentation and service and serve a menu that the average person wouldn't order out for dinner on a Saturday night! Also consider swapping your late night sweet table for a savory spread of Poutine, Sliders, New York Fries, or Chinese Food!

Tip 2: Choose a Live Band over a DJ
Not that we don't love DJs, but realistically, you see them at 99% of the weddings you go to and for that reason, you'll remember a wedding where you didn't. Not only is live music more engaging and entertaining for guests, but it also creates an electric energy at your reception that draws guests in to the moment and keeps them there longer.

Tip 3: Choose a Unique Venue
A banquet hall is a great place for a wedding, but so are Art Galleries, Museums, Historic Buildings, Wineries, Private Residences, Conservation Areas, and Out-of-Town Resorts... If you want to wow your guests, give them their first WOW when they open your wedding invite and see the location you've selected!

Tip 4: Creative Bar Ware
If you have a theme for your wedding, bring it to your bar. Whether it means mason jars for a vintage chic wedding, elaborate martini garnishes for a black tie affair, or ice luges for a signature drink, put some extra effort into the presentation of the beverages; it's sure to make a lasting impression.

Tip 5: Contemporary Ceremony Music
While classical music is classically beautiful (I had it at my own wedding), some of the most memorable wedding ceremonies I've been to, have used contemporary slow tempo music that is personal to the couple. I've seen a processions to Leona Lewis' "I Got You" and Sade's "By You Side" and recessionals to Coldplays' "Clocks" and Beyonce's "Halo" and let me tell you, I remembered those moments like no other. They were a refreshing unexpected change and it left me thinking that these couples were on to something good.

Tip 6: Don't Toss the Bouquet, Dedicate it
Something I've grown to dislike very much at weddings is the "Bouquet Toss", in fact I've come to find it quite tacky and meaningless. No longer is it exciting to race to the floor to announce to a room full of couples, that you're still single and ready to catch a symbol of someone elses happiness. Instead, something I've recently seen done as an alternative is for a bride to opt out of tossing her bouquet, for a chance to dedicate it to the one women in the room who has made the greatest impact on her life, often a mother, grandmother, aunt, or friend. It was a welcomed change and it definitely created a memory I'd like to see repeated.

Tip 7: Flip your Photo Booth Station for a Flip Book Station
Photo booths for guests to participate in during cocktail hour and your evening reception are very popular, but if you want something equally as pleasing but more original, consider a flip book station. Lots of media event companies offer these portable stations for corporate affairs and weddings. They will take a 10-12 second video of your guests with props and scrolling messages and turn it into a mini-flip book on the spot to take away as a wedding memorabilia. I've seen them done before, and they are a HUGE success, not to mention so cool!

Tip 8: Multiple Centerpieces
Your centerpieces are the center of attention for your guest tables... If you want to make them stand out, choose not one, but two to three different styles that you will alternate on the various tables throughout your reception venue. Guests will have more to look and more to remember!

Tip 9: Unique Centerpiece Games
If you're giving away your centerpiece, don't be predictable. We've all passed a napkin to the left, and pulled a set of keys out of our pockets and waved them in the air. One of the most memorable weddings I've been to used a really cute centerpiece give-a-way game. They gave every guest a number from 1-10 under their bread plate, then played a horse race on all the AV screens in the venue with 10 horses. If the horse who had your number won, you got the centerpiece. In the first 10 seconds of the race, guests were surprised and intrigued, in the next 60 seconds, they were up off their feet, cheering for their "Sea Biscuit" loving the excitement of the impromptu race.

Tip 10: Don't Just "Name" Your Wedding Party, "Explain" Them
Include a "Get to Know the Wedding Party” section in your programs or on the tables in your reception area. It's a given that many of your guests might not know all of the people in your bridal party or their histories with you. Include a picture and Bio of each Wedding Party member so your guests can learn more about each person and why they are so special to you and your significant other!

Top 3 Mistakes Couples Can Make When Planning Their Wedding...

Planning a wedding is never easy and unless you've done it before, it can be a lot of "Live and Learn" lessons. Having planned more than our fair share of weddings, including our own, here is our list of the top 3 mistakes (we think) couples can easily make when planning their nuptials.

Number 3: The more DIY projects the better...
Couples often think DIY projects will save them a ton of cash and while this is true for some areas of the wedding, it can be the opposite for others. Invite Kits are a great DIY to save you money if you're not in to custom invites. But if you're not a graphic designer and don't have access to whole sale paper costs, doing your invites from scratch could be a disaster and cost you more than if you out sourced them from an Invite Company. Centerpieces are also a very sensitive area to DIY if you are having fresh florals. Florists are considered professionals for a reason... if the average person could throw together a bouquet or properly assemble an arrangement so that it lives the length of a wedding day, we'd all be in the business of flowers... but we're not! DIY on projects that are cost effective, and low on stress. Be reasonable on what you take on, and know when to leave it in the hands of a professional vendor.

Number 2: Not starting out with a realistic budget...
This next mistake sums up a number of financial mistakes such as:
- Not researching average wedding costs in your area when creating a budget
- Not finalizing a guest list early on... the more people you add, the more money you're going to spend
- Not looking at personal finances to see what you can actually afford
- And the most important, not aligning your vision to your budget.
It's really important to figure out what you should expect to pay for what you want as you assemble a wedding budget. If you want Ghost Chairs and satin linens for example, research them before you allot funds to your decor area. This way you will know if what you are seeking is realistic. You want to know early on how much you have to spend, and what you should expect to spend it on based on what you want. Budget and vision are always a compromise. It will be impossible for the average couple to afford everything they want. But with a little creativity and the right planning, there are endless ways to make your wedding a real success.

Number 1: Over Planning for your Wedding... Under Planning for your Marriage!
One the biggest mistakes couples can make is to loose site on what a wedding is really about... The marriage! So many newlywed couples have said that looking back on their engagement, they realized that they spent so much time and energy on planning the wedding, that they spent very little time planning for their transition into married life. Before you walk down the aisle, in between flower appointments and food tastings, set aside time to plan and discuss how you will adjust to married life; The things like new living arrangements, family planning, your work schedules, your own personal time/hobbies, a new financial union, family dynamics, house hold chores, independence vs. codependence etc. Weddings are amazing in every way. That's why Kelly and I love what we do so much. Just don't forget that they are just the beginning of your journey as husband and wife!

A Real Charitable Favour...

Giving a donation to a special charity in your guest's honour in lieu of a traditional wedding favour is nothing new... but the charity "Sleeping Children Around the World" (SCAW) was definitely new to me when I saw one of our amazing couples, Vanessa and Naresh support them at their wedding last October.

In lieu of traditional gifts, Vanessa and Naresh bought a bed kit through SCAW for every guest table at their wedding... And they had close to 50 tables. Bed kits are given to needy children in over 33 countries around the world. Each kit consists of: a mat or mattress, pillow, sheet, mosquito net, clothes, school supplies, a towel and other necessities specific to their area. What made this charity stand out for me was the direct impact it made on each guest at their wedding. See what makes SCAW unique is that every child who receives a kit is photographed by volunteers with their kit, showing the donor's name, country and special occasion. Each photo is mailed back to the donor providing a direct connection between the donated funds and the child who's life you've impacted.

Every table at Vanessa and Naresh's wedding had a beautiful write up about SCAW, but most importantly the picture of a different child who directly benefited from the donation they made in their guest's honour. Paying close attention to guests is something we wedding planners do best at weddings and at Vanessa and Naresh's wedding, guests were incredibly humbled by the bride and groom's donation.

Love, Marriage...then a Baby Carriage!!

Here at Laura Kelly Wedding Design, we obviously Live and breathe WEDDINGS! But Since I'm expecting my second child (and baby is also on the brain) I thought I'd share a really neat idea for a baby shower or party.

These days, most couples want to find out what the sex of their child is....and some have willpower like none other! Finding out whether the baby is he or she is exciting no matter how you find out....but here is a new trend hitting the baby makers!!

Go to your ultrasound and ask the technician to keep the gender a secret from you. But get them to write it down on a piece of paper and seal it inside an envelope. Then ( without peeking!) head over to your favourite baker ( or one that Laura and I can recommend) and hand it over! Go home, and start planning a party for your closest friends, family and loved ones. At the party, get the cake delivered and as a couple, cut into the cake surrounded by your guests and see of the baker has put pink or blue icing in between the layers!! How fun is that!! What a moment for all to share, and you get to eat cake too!! mmmmmm....cake.......

Michelle & Brad - August 14th, 2010

This past August, Kelly and I concluded a 14 month journey with Michelle and Brad that began in June 2009 when we started planning their purple inspired summer wedding. Over the course of the 14 months, Michelle and Brad auditioned for the SLICE NETWORK's new show, Rich Groom Poor Groom and were instantly cast into the show's first season. The journey we shared with Michelle and Brad both on and off camera was a memorable one! Along the way, Michelle ended up giving up control of the wedding to Brad in order to fulfill their commitment to the show. And Brad literally, took "flight" with their purple themed wedding and brought Michelle's and his love for the Air Cadets into every aspect of the wedding, from the cake to the centerpieces, even the sky was no limit, having an airplane banner circle their Golf Course Reception for all to see that read "CONGRATULATIONS MICHELLE & BRAD". Michelle and Brad, we couldn't be happier for you!

On September 18th, 2010 Kelly and I had the absolute pleasure of working with Melanie & Michael and Rich Bride Poor Bride on their vintage glam wedding. Melanie & Michael were a couple with a strong eye for detail, exquisitte taste and endless passion... for one another! Thanks to Rachel A Clingen and her team of creative designers and Studio 2000, Melanie & Michael's wedding day will go down in history in our books. Melanie and her sister Michelle, are owners of Paper Damsels invites, and thanks to Melanie's creative work on their invites and stationary, their wedding had a truly unique and inspiring look. Punches of chartruse, demask linens, feathers and their custom monogram were everywhere. Thank you again to Rachel and her team. The job you all did was unforgettable!

Marvelous in Muskoka...

One of our beautiful and wonderfully creative couples for 2011 are getting married in Muskoka. They have rented out the entire resort for their guests and each couple will get to experience this Muskoka weekend in their own quaint cabin on the property!

So... how about homemade maps that allow guests to view the entire property and the location of all other guest cabins!!

We found these on one of our favourite homemade goody sites ( http://www.etsy.com/) and passed the info along....each cabin will now have an adorable handmade map of the property and where each cabin is located as well as all the amenities on the resort.

So unique and fun!

On June 5th, 2010, Kelly and I had the privilege of being a part of Sam & Raff's Modern, Music Inspired wedding. Their wedding, both ceremony and reception, took place in Liberty Grand's Artifcat Room. With a design scheme of blues and whites, calla lilies and flood lighting, a modern, yet warm atmosphere was created.

In the company of 175 guests, live musicians, and their pet dogs, "Chloe" and "Reese," Sam and Raff moved every guest in attendance by their love, passion and commitment to each other. Fl orals provided by Flower Parade , dance and bongo beats spun by DJ Emporium, a turn-table record cake by Patricia's Cakes and photo booth by Hart Entertainment captured guests until the wee hours of the morning.

This past weekend, Kelly and I had the privilege of working with Victoria and Jon at their Appleby College Wedding. We had previously worked with Victoria's family last October for her sister's wedding. It was great to reunite with their family and be apart of their special day.

As an alumni of Appleby College, Victoria felt very strongly about returning there one day to get married. On April 24, 2010 she did just that! In one of the most beautiful and historic chapels we've seen, a picture perfect wedding was captured by Austin Sagala of Sagala Photography. Victoria's old Chaplin married them, student musicians played for guests during cocktails and the school dinning hall was shut down and converted into Victoria and Jon's yellow and black themed reception. Thanks to the help of all of the staff at Appleby College, Pat's Party Rentals, Just Temptations Cakes and With All My Heart Decor, Victoria and Jon had their visions brought to life.

Wedding Party Gifts

It seems with every couple we work with, sooner or later we always get the same question: What do we get our bridal party members as a gift?

Some even start a few steps back with, "Are we suppose to get gifts for our bridal party?"

So here is our thoughts on the Bridal Party Gifts:

Is it a must? - No
Should you do it? - Yes

The idea behind offering your bridal party members a gift closer to the wedding (usually on the night of the rehearsal dinner) is to show your gratitude for all of their help in planning, organizing and participating in your wedding. Often groomsmen and bridesmaids have contributed to the planning of Wedding Showers, Bachelorette and Bachelor Parties and/or Jack & Jills. They often help you and your fiance with some of the wedding "To Do's" and are a pillar of support throughout the process. The idea of the bridal party gift is a small way to say "Thanks!"

Who is usually given a gift?
- Often everyone in the bridal party including Flower Girls and Ring Boys. Many couples also choose to include Parents, especially when they are financially contributing to the wedding.

Here are just some of the common and not so common ideas we've seen over the years:

- Wedding jewellery for the bridesmaids to wear on the day of the wedding
- Shawls/pashminas for the bridesmaids to wear on the day of the wedding
- Cuff links for the groomsmen to wear on the day of the wedding
- Day of Gift Bags for the bridesmaids with items such as: Flip Flops, Sun Glasses, Lip Gloss, Kleenex, favourite perfume etc.
- Gift Cards for the Bridal Party; it's a practical gift that everyone can use! Examples: La Senza, Best Buy, Future Shop, LCBO, Restaurants, or any store you know your friends/family love!
- Personalized Clothing: Custom Jerseys or Caps for the sports lovers - Custom T-Shirts for the fashionistas!
- Treat them to an Activity: Golf, Cigar Rolling Workshops, Day at the Spa, Yoga Workshops, Cooking Classes, Wine Tasting Tours
- Get each member a subscription to their favourite magazine
- Personally Yours/Things Engraved: You can always find the traditional items here! Examples: Flasks, business card holders, pens, lighters, pocket watches, compact mirrors, mugs, Swiss Army knives
- Tickets to a show, concert, or sports event to enjoy after the wedding

The amount of money you choose to spend is up to you. The act of giving a gift isn't about how much you spend, it's about the thought you put into it!

Venue Selection

Oftentimes Couples have a dream venue in mind and will do anything in their power to host their wedding there. They throw budget out of the window ( afterall...sometimes it's Mom and Dad's money) and get the venue and food selection of their dreams.

But what if you are paying for your own wedding and you are stuck between choosing the venue of your dreams (one that is higher than your comfort level in terms of budget) and picking one that you feel more comfortable affording but doesn't meet some expectations?

Here's the deal. A wedding planner can help you stay on track of budget and allow you to feel more comfortable about your decision. Realistically, a wedding budget is a sliding scale. If you spend too much in category A...you need to scale back in category B.

I had this discussion with one of my Brides today. She fell in love with one of the venues we visited and yet she wanted to keep visiting other venues that were on the very other end of the scale. After each meeting she would look defeated because at the lower pricepoint...she just wasn't feeling the same way as she did with the more expensive venue. I could tell that price was prohibiting her to make a decision and allow herself to fully fall in love with that venue.

So I made her a deal....book the venue that you have fallen in love with and let me worry about your remaining budget. If we cut back on other area's...and become a little more thrifty or creative...you get the location of your dreams and we will stick within your OVERALL wedding budget.

She agreed and they signed on the dotted line this evening. The couple was beaming afterwards! So happy.

The moral of this story....look at the overall budget. Dont get caught up in the budget of each and every item right up front. Venue will be the largest price tag. So you need to be cautious and stay within your means...but don't settle too much. Get the venue that makes you feel amazing when you walk in the doors, the way your guests will. And then use your remaining budget wisely....if you go for the venue that was less expensive but doesn't have that "wow" factor...you will feel that way every time you walk into it. Afterall...guests always remember the food and atmosphere at a wedding.

The general rule of thumb is that your venue will be half of your overall budget. So if your venue is costing $20,000....your safe to say that your overall Wedding budget will be $40,000 . But these days...you can really get creative and help lower your other costs...especially with the help of a creative and talented Wedding Planner ;)

We are working with a very well known Wedding Decor company in the GTA for the wedding of Cheryl and Brian in August.

They recently changed their whole linen theme after seeing a new product available...contrasting Damask! Can't wait to post pictures of the tables after their wedding...you'll see what we mean :)

No more boring linens....step it up this year or next with a bold linen statement! Bold damask linens with dashes and pops of bold colour statements...that's the new trend...and we love it!

Rich Bride, Poor Bride...fingers crossed

A HUGE thank you to Jennifer Yearwood for getting us the opportunity to audition for RBPB!

She was so thoughtful and sent the producers of RBPB an email asking them to see us, and telling them that she thought we were perfect for the show! And they called to ask us to come for a casting!

We had our casting last weekend and are now wishing, hoping and praying we get the call back!
Fingers crossed !!!!! What a great opportunity that would be :)

Last year, around this time we were starting to plan a wedding for Mandy and Harry Hickey.
They won a contest on Breakfast Television, and 5 week later, with our help, were walking down the aisle (Live on national television) as Man and Wife !

Well, it seems that BT has the wedding itch again this year, and have called us (and our emergency wedding kits) to help out again in '09!

We are thrilled and honoured to be asked to participate in another wedding on BT this fall, and can't wait to hear who the next deserving couple will be!

My gosh....things are busy!

Just when you think things will slow down a bit for Winter...we move full speed ahead with planning for next year!

2 of our amazing couples right now are Amanda and Kevin ( march 14, 2009) and Cheryl and Brian ( August 15, 2009)...we are thrilled to be working with them! They are so sweet and eager to make their days ultra special!

Some of the unique idea's that we have come up with so far for these two couples are:

1) Candy Centrepieces...yum!

2) Black Chiavari Chairs and light coloured gathered linens...co shic.

3) Donation to a favourite charity, instead of bombonnieres...

The Value of a Wedding Planner!

So we just received a last minute booking for a wedding on August 16th - in less than 2 weeks. We will be co-ordinating the Day of.

This whole wedding has been planned by the Mother of the Bride and she is beyond stressed! Laura and I have been to see her twice now, and both times she is close to throwing in the towel and running away!

This wonderful lady has spent the last year of her life planning the wedding by herself and trying to please everyone around her! The only person she forgot was herself. Isn't the Mother of the Bride supposed to be enjoying the last few weeks before her little girl grows up and becomes a married woman? Shouldn't she be excited and proud, instead of stressed and close to tears??

Laura and I have been given a folder of contracts ( in which are scattered and unorganized) and asked to save the day! Which we will of course :)

It just proves once again, that if we had been hired long ago, we could have planned this wedding along with the MOB and made this past year a happy and stress free time for this whole family.

A lessoned learned too late! At least the MOB can start to relax and let us handle the rest...and we'll do it proudly!

1. Always have an Emergency Kit present on your Wedding Day!
At Laura KellyWedding Design, we always carry a Wedding Day Emergency Kit with us. With items such as: Pins, sewing kits, band aids, hairspray, deodorant, emergency rings, nail polish remover, visine, Tylenol, etc.

2. Invitation Etiquette:
Send your invites out at least 8-12 weeks prior to your wedding day. R.S.V.P. dates should always be set for one month prior to your wedding day to allow yourself time to track down guests who have not yet responded and to make a seating plan that works.

3. Real flowers on the Wedding Cake?
This is a big no-no. Real flowers can essentially poison your cake by leaching pesticides into your icing! Opt for artificial/certified organic flowers or lay buds on top of a plastic tray to ensure the stems do not touch the icing or pierce the cake.

4. To Favour or Not to Favour...
Many couples struggle to find that perfect wedding give-away. If you’ve hit a road block or don’t have a money tree in your backyard, why don’t you consider making a donation to a Charity or Foundation in your guests honour. These days, many guests will appreciate the gesture and it will allow your wedding day to touch others in need.

5. Free Tux!
Planning on renting tuxedos? At most Tuxedo retailers, the Groom and Father of the Groom will get their tux for free when a bridal party of 4 or more rent there as well. Before making any final decisions, inquire about this option if you have at least 4 groomsmen renting a tux as well.

6. Aim to be different...
Remember when all is said and done, weddings are a reflection of you the couple. Whatever your style, don’t hold back. If there is one day to truly make your own, this is that day! Nothing is off limits, and anything is possible. If you can dream it, live it... If you want it, have it!
